Two more arrests made over death of Nepalese man in Osaka

OSAKA —

Police said Monday they have arrested a man and a woman for allegedly being part of a gang that beat a 42-year-old Nepalese man to death in Osaka last week.

According to police, Bishnu Prasad Dhamala was attacked while he was walking home after work in Osaka’s Abeno Ward early in the morning on Jan 16 by two men and two women. He died later in hospital.

Police arrested Hiroki Shiraishi, 21, a tattoo artist, and Miyoko Shiraishi, 22, at the scene after a passerby called them, TBS reported. Two other assailants, Hiromasa Ie, 21, and Tsukamoto Kuniko, 21, fled the scene and were traced to Tokyo where they were arrested on Saturday.

Ie was quoted by police as saying he “kicked the foreigner in the face and dropped a bike on him from about head height. I can’t believe we killed him,” TBS reported. Tsukamoto reportedly told police that he tried to stop the attack.

CCTV footage shows the group stomping on Dhamala’s face and throwing a bicycle onto his head from a raised arm position while he lay motionless on the ground, TBS said. The four suspects have said they did not know Dhamala. Police are questioning the four suspects to find out the motive for the assault.

Police said that Dhamala, who worked in a restaurant, has been in Japan for about 10 years.
