Nintendo of America confirms new Pokemon game for 2012

Will the 3DS start to catch’em all in 2012?

Tucked inside a press release touting the sales of the 3DS, Nintendo confirmed that a new Pokemon title will arrive in 2012 along with new installments of Mario Party and Kid Icarus. The big question is what type of Pokemon game will it be and on which platform.

The press release Nintendo sent out stated the following.

With a strong lineup of software on the horizon, including new installments in the Mario Party™, Pokémon™ and Kid Icarus™ franchises, as well as third-party games such as Resident Evil® Revelations from Capcom and METAL GEAR SOLID® 3D Snake Eater from Konami for Nintendo 3DS, that momentum should continue into the first quarter of 2012 and beyond.

Nintendo recently revealed the cross-over title Nobunga’s Ambition X Pokemon for the DS in Japan that puts dozens of Pokemon in a historical Japanese strategy game setting. Nobunga’s Ambition is traditionally a game that is not released in the West so that seems like an unlikely candidate. A sequel to Pokemon Black and White seems the most likely candidate but will it be released to the Nintendo 3DS? Now that sales of the handheld have picked up to the point where it is selling faster than the Wii, that’s probably a given if it does happen.
