In an effort to raise the spirits of Fukushima residents who continue to suffer from the effects of the triple disasters of the March 11 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear issue, Blue Sky Project, an organization formed by young entrepreneurs from the embattled prefecture, will be in New York for this special candlelight vigil.
While Fukushima is now known worldwide as the home of the distressed nuclear power plant, the prefecture boasts great natural beauty, an abundance of agricultural products, and well-made cultural goods. Blue Sky Project aims to shed light on the positive aspects of Fukushima and erase the negative images caused by the current crisis in Japan by introducing New Yorkers to Fukushima’s vibrant cultural and commercial assets.
Because New York experienced the horrors of 9/11, Fukushima draws inspiration from this city. Blue Sky Project wants to bring together New Yorkers in support of Fukushima’s recovery process as the prefecture continues to fight financial hardship and a damaged reputation caused by the ongoing nuclear crisis.
At the service each participant will receive a traditional painted candle from Fukushima’s Aizu region to light. Along with saying a prayer for recovery, New Yorkers and Blue Sky Project members will sing popular songs from the prefecture, including “I Love You and Need You Fukushima,” composed by Fukushima musicians after the disaster.
